Isn't the USB connection used just to get the power for the signal converter? The stereo sync signal is normally emitted on the VGA connector directly. That it doesn't work right with the displays you mention could be due to the fact that they use the DDC signal for the original purpose - communicating the monitor properties to the PC and - and therefore would interfere with the stereo sync.
