I think things will get a lot easier for people when I submit the Cmakeports support I mentioned in a thread a while back. It can automatically build zlib alongside the OSG (without including zlib in the source tree).

Just FYI, zlib is normally included in the 3rd party packages by default, since for example libpng and a few of OSG's own plugins depend on it. So modulo a few tweaks here and there, it should build for Windows just fine. If it's useful to a group of people perhaps it could be included in OSG?
