Interesting point.  At least this is controllable in osmand now.  I like
track up, just as I'd want to orient a paper map.  But my goal is often
to prepare for the next driving maneuver, vs learning the map.  I do
like north up in browse mode.

With power usage, do you believe that

  osmand running gps receiver, displaying where you are and navigating
  along an already calculated route
 
takes significantly more power than

  osmand running gps receiver and displaying where you are


my impression is that the real power use is the GPS receiver, the
display, and maybe CPU time to update the map on the display.   But I
have not done comparisons - a lot of my use of osmand is in a car, with
power.   I use it on phone internal battery briefly fairly often.  When
I am hiking and using it for a long time, I use an external battery --
which basically means I agree with you, except I think from 100% to 0%
I'd get 2h, not 1h.
