Yes, that does work. I would never have thought to look at "Configure Map" to find the "off" button for something I did a "Search" for.
I will try to remember this convoluted approach to getting rid of the clutter (and thanks Peter for replying with the answer!). As a user I would much prefer some sort of easy to reach "button" available from "Search". It could be as simple as "Cancel" or "Off" or "Clear" etc. And thanks for the idea about using a quick action. I keep forgetting how handy that is. I may go that route!
