Hello after installing oss4 I immediately noticed noise almost like listening to /dev/urandom.
This is because all the mixer controls are all set to the maximum values. I do not think this is a desirable default. Sending random noise or played back sound through audio equipment at maximum volume settings is annoying or worse. It requires more work on the user's part to get from this state to usable state because under normal use it looks like 2-5 mixers need to be on (but usually not maxed out) several are irrelevant and ~10 have to be muted on a typical ac97 codec. This default causes loud noise for a few seconds between the time the driver is loaded and the settings are restored.
