Hi,

The default volumes have been carefully tuned to work OK in practically 
all systems. Unfortunately there are some poorly designed motherboards 
that pick noise from some unused input(s).

Defaulting to all muted doesn't work. Typical users don't realize that 
the mixer levels should be changed. Instead they think that OSS is 
broken because there is no sound.
