Hi, I'm working on a config flag (mixer_muted=1 in osscore.conf) that makes all inputs/outputs muted when the modules are loaded. After that one can adjust the mixer settings manually and save them as defaults by running the savemixer utility. This should work up to some degree in the current hg version but it doesn't affect the mute controls yet.
It may be that your motherboard requires a dedicated codec driver that has the bad mute controls hardwired to ON or OFF.
