Because people see it this way:
Q: Why do you stay in a race that you have lost mathematically?
A: I'm hoping someone will shoot the black guy.

The fact that Bill Clinton had indeed wrapped up his race before June  
and that Jerry Brown, had dropped out to preserve party unity leeds  
people  to dismiss that part of the statement.
