I think it's because of the different dynamic in the election.  In  
March, she had multiple (not completely impossible) routes to winning,  
so this was just part of the static, and nobody noticed (I never heard  
about it until now).  At this point in the election, really the *only*  
plausible way she has to get elected is if Obama gets killed.  So it  
becomes easy to interpret her comment as "I'm staking my election  
chances on the other guy getting murdered", which is kind of more  
offensive.

You're right of course that she's said lots of silly things to keep  
her campaign going.  Part of it may be just that everyone's so damn  
sick of her nonsense at this point.
