Absolutely, and it's even worse since Reagan because the GOP has been  
largely taken over by social conservatives who think that they agree  
with Goldwater which is why they call themselves "Conservative". I  
gave up on the GOP when I realized back in the 80's in high school  
that its platform was largely rhetorical and unimplemented. And that  
the GOP was at least as likely to increase the size of government and  
its budget, if not more so, as the Dems; they just do so in different  
areas, Defense, Energy and Corporate largesse.

The GOP has always sounded much more Jeffersonian than the Dems but  
has also been much more agressively Hamiltonian in how it handles  
power and authority.
