I'd say he was the last traditionalist Republican President rather  
than "real", but I grok your meaning and pretty much agree.

As a native Virginian, the idealized Jefferson of course :) Even  
Jefferson realized that you would have to be somewhat Hamiltonian to  
exercise authority. His main complaint with Hamilton was agrarian v  
urban.

Absolutely, I'd rather have "tax and spenders" than "tax-cut and  
spenders" any day of the week.  Of course, most of them are willfully  
ignorant of Hamilton's policies and even more so with regard to Adam  
Smith.
