Absolutely, and it's even worse since Reagan because the GOP has been

as much of a fucking criminal bastard as he was, Nixon was the last
real Republican President. And even there, the slide was beginning.
Reagan wasn't bad. He cut taxes and increased revenues. The killer
was that congress (both sides) spent above and beyond what he saved.
Remember that Carter left Reagan with a 12% inflation rate. I
remember home mortgages going for as high as 16% at one
point.
The GOP has always sounded much more Jeffersonian
Which Jefferson? His Presidency was rather more Hamiltonian than the
rest of his life.
than the Dems but has also been much more agressively Hamiltonian in
how it handles
power and authority.
But, sadly, not in how it handles finance. they spend like the Dem
stereotype and have none of the fiscal responsibility that makes
Hamilton at least reasonable.
Which, to answer the question about why McCain is not my hero (as a
politician), is why I didn't want him to get the nomination.[1]
You are right that the republicans have been spending like the
democrats of yore. The only reason the republicans remain
competitive is that there are no old style democrats either. They
have all been shoved further left, perhaps to differentiate themselves
from the republicans, or that's just the way it is.
You know it's bad when Hillary seems like a moderate.
In any case, as a conservative I'm left with the choice of voting for
someone I'm not all that happy about or voting for the socialist. It
stinks but there it is and I will never vote for the socialist.
Did anyone watch Obama on O'Reilly? I recorded it and have been
watching.
IMHO, Obama really handled himself well. He came across as capable of
thinking on his feet, explaining his positions well and did a pretty
good job of making his case.
The debates will be interesting.
OTOH, the Lipstick on a Pig comment was dunderheaded.
I use that expression too, and in context, you know he was not calling
Palin a pig. BUT... In the way he owns the words "Community
Organizer" she owns "lipstick" and it will cost him two or three days
of being off message (once again) defending something that he simply
didn't have to say.
There are plenty of other analogies he could have used.
=c=
[1] As a military hero, he is a mans, man. Any soldier would be glad
to follow him and his "temper" is a plus for him.
In his acceptance speech he spoke about the fact that the VC
eventually broke him. That is a hell of an admission, but the simple
truth for anyone in that situation. It's always WHEN not IF you break.
He started life as a typical fighter jock, playboy but because of the
adversity of being captured and tortured, changed him for the better.
It's a hell of a story.
