So would I as a PT.....I would assess the movement (functional task), assess the strategy used, and hypothsize to what impairments would maybe cause a faulty strategy....then, I would evaluate those hypothetical impairments to confirm their existence.....I would then treat those impairments in a functionally driven approach....
So, for example....the task, transfer is done with a faulty srategy (or requires moderate assistance)...I would hypothesize that strength, coordination, balance may be the impairment...I would evaluate strength, coordination, and balance.....if they were decreased, then I would implement a strengthening program (within a functional context) as I would do the same for coordination, balance, etc... It would not matter if it were UE weakness to push up from the chair rails or LE weakness to rise Now....I am not sure I see a difference here as to how an OT or PT should address the functional problem..... The issue as I understand it is , now, how does that transfer deficit affect the patient's occupational desire to go from the w/c to the car so they can go to the ballgame with their son... > David A.
