Dear RC - I have a 2 patients (husband and wife, both in middle 80's) with multiple medical problems between them. Wife uses walker at all times and is fair to good with safety awareness and also has ongoing (for years) vestibular problems. Husband was using walker but b/w PT and OT decided he would be more compliant with a cane after watching him in action for 3 weeks (or non - walker action/compliance so to speak), husband expressed very strong interest in using one of the "cadillac" walkers - the ones with the big wheels, seat and hand brakes to walk safely on the grassy area around his lake when they get discharged. Also expressed dissatisfaction with cost of these walkers. Too make a long story short I thought nothing of giving him and wife (since they are always co-treated) a whole OT session on using this cadillac walker on our grassy areas around our facility - which was very educational and beneficial in there decision making process of purchasing this non-Medicare covered item. Was I treating there "human occupation" or as PT says giving them a walk!!!
