I have not specifically seen the Bioness used with MS. My experience is with
both TBI and CVA. Ron. There is a small but significant body of literature
looking at the use of Estim with getting return in the hand and arm after
stroke (functional return) and also with preventing subluxation and reducing
tone. I think it is very appropriate for OTs to use it in their repetoire of
skills that focus on regaining functional use of the upper extremity. There are
many ways to use all modalities that truly loose the OT perspective, including
the use of cones etc.

My exprience with the Bioness has been positive. I have seen it successful
reduce tone and edema, and also facilitate functional movement. It is just one
more tool that is very useful in an overall OT intervention program that also
addresses the functional use of the upper extremity. There is also some
literature (studies) to support its use.

The current status of thinking on the return after stroke is that multiple
repetitions of functional movements that are task oriented and approximated to
approach normal movement do make changes in the brain even 20 years after (we
have the evidence available now with both PET and fMRI scans). If any one is
interested in a more detailed review and some places to get further information
I will provide at a later date. (I have a textbook chapter deadline today but
could not resist a brief reply)
