However, the Max232 uses a fair amount of power to drive the charge pumps, 
which you would then just be throwing away.

If you just used a DS2480 directly you can connect to TTL level signals 
avoiding two max232 type level shifters.  The DS2480 has a polarity select 
pin which allows you to ensure the phase is correct.
