I don't see any problems with your layout, a quick check to make sure you have the serial port working is to stick a wire connecting pins 2 and 3. Then in serialport tool of choice (gtkterm is reasonable) turn off flow control and see if you get echo through the port (everything you type comes back). IF that works, pull out the wire and see if it stops working. repeat until happy. That will at least prove the port works. Do this with the 9-25 converter.
