oddly enough, I still get the occasional error about once every hour, 
sometimes once every two hours in syslog:
smsc95xx ... eth0: failed to read register index 0x00000114

Since eth0 is disabled it seems to be of no consequence.

I should have unloaded the module too - if its not in the kernel, I have 
to check.
