I can’t see any benefit to being forced onto HFC. It’s not a network designed
to deliver fast broadband – it’s a network designed to multicast TV. Those in
the HFC areas will end up with the worst of the possible options.

One thing I’ve learnt from this lot is that you can’t believe a word they say.
Don’t like the Labor NBN? Then tell us what you’re going to do. No, before the
election. Then after the election they give us such a piece of rubbish and it’s
going to cost the same price and be vastly inferior! You can try to polish a
turd, but it’s still a turd.

I hope that you’re right about HFC. Reading the document, it could be
interpreted that way, but there are no guarantees. Also, we will still be
constrained by the limitations of HFC.

So sad, so sad.

If I was a Liberal supporter, I’d be feeling pretty pissed off at the moment,
especially given that, as a sector, we are the most likely to invest in, and
benefit from, fast internet services, and be most likely to have cable
broadband already (so no NBN for you.)

I think there’s uncertainty because NBNCo can’t guarantee that they can take
over the HFC, or for what price.

But, my strong suspicion is that ADSL (and the fixed line network) isn’t going
to be maintained in HFC areas. The government will try to take over the HFC
network(s), will need to upgrade them to support the many millions more
premises attached to that network, and the existing DSL network will be
decommissioned

Cheers
Ken

Hold on. My interpretation of the document is that HFC areas won’t be getting
the NBN at all. Zilch. Zero. They will be getting a small undocumented upgrade
to their HFC but that’s it.

I looked for secondary information on whether my interpretation was right, and
found this:

Of course, the conspiracy theorists amongst us might think that they don’t want
to have any competition for Rupert Murdoch’s cable network; cable would be
completely isolated from the NBN and thereby guarantee another 17 years of
Foxtel.
