Thanks. I was mostly referring to the protocol syntax/conventions.

Now that I am reading about it it looks like there are devices that are
capable of being authenticated via 802.1x and some that are not, and for
those you are forced to do MAB. What makes a device inelligible for 802.1x
authentication?

At any rate, I am exploring this but it definitely seems to introduce some
extra complexity into the picture - in comparison to SNMP.
