S'truth! The IIIx and V use a fewer number of RAM and ROM wait states.
These are 4 and 2 on older devices, but 1 and 1 on newer devices.

Er, how can you tell, without running 3.1 on a III already? Don't forget
the IIIx and V hardware are using the newer EZ processor, which can (if
I'm not mistaken) access memory with fewer wait-states, among other
things. In other words, I'd assume it's the hardware, before I'd assume
it's the software.
