In the example of a calculator with no real text input, I contend and agree
with Elia. The Shift indicator is usless (if) there truly is no difference
(in the application) between 'c' and 'C'. (The burden is on the developer
to make it that way). And there are plenty of apps in the common fold
(certified or not, mostly not) that tend to stray from this.
In addition, why do the menu short cuts put the: 'Command' item at the
bottom of the screen instead of just showing a '/' in the graffiti area
like an extended '\'stroke ?
They could still echo the command 'cut, copy, paste, what ever' But even
that's not consistant, why do they ONLY echo, cut, copy, paste, or edit
commands and not others. Granted, other items may be obvious, say causing a
switch to another screen, but some may not. If a meny causes a change to
the current screen, changes field focus what have you, then that too should
be echod if we want to be consistant. But alas there are no hooks for this
so it's not required.
Certification is a case by case thing. I have (2) certified apps on my Palm
(not mine) that I can consistantly crash. So either (a) they didn't really
test it. (b) it was rushed/pushed like some of the CD apps. (c) there are
other factors involved which are not relevant to testing at all ;-)
In our case, Palm did come through for us on an exception. It was like
pulling teeth to get it done though. My experience has been if you push
hard and long enough, Palm in the end is not unreasonable. Dave, Marice and
others are far more than fair in the end, but getting them involved through
the proper chanels takes far too long.
