for phones.. and small devices i think the ME is fine too.
most of these "small devices" dont have a user interface.

and where are those libraries.. once those libraries are available,
sure.. lets use it.
the problem is that the PalmPilot is not really a "small device".
it can be programmed just like a normal computer.. it has the
capabilities to have strong applications.. good games, easy
database access..
i would not consider the PalmPilot small scale.
it has everything a normal computer has:
a) display
b) primary memory (RAM)
c) secondary memory (programs etc.)
d) input device
e) ...
to me, it is a smaller version of a laptop.

i can see the "benefits" in the future.. but everyone wants
to know about NOW.
i just feel that there is a severe lack in "support" right now,
which in reality makes the device useless for programs using
KVM - right NOW.
it would take Sun NO TIME at all to write a set of wrapper
classes that can access every PalmOS API call (just like they use
peers for AWT components)..
their limited class heirarchy is useless, for anything serious
on the palm.. a lot of people will be rewriting their "core
objects" in order to do anything useful - so why not just
include it?
what i would like to see is:
Java Micro Edition + PalmOS "packages"
it would be really nice if someone (hint hint Sun) could write
a package labelled "palmos.*" which included everything.. and
an implementation of a JDBC driver maybe (the java.sql package
is just a set of interfaces, so there is no code).
without the packages.. you have a limited set of classes which
can only do certain things.. (and these apps will look crap
in comparison to other PalmOS apps - ie: those written in C)
if the PalmOS package was there.. and the KVM was stable.
"i would be using it right now". :)
cheers.
