Must be a programmer thing because I have the same problem.  I prefer my
office lighting subdued and indirect (halogen lighting  bouncing off the
ceiling is great).  This reduces the glare on my monitor but also makes
it hard to read my Palm VII, whether the backlighting is on or off.
