David -- Yes, there are some situations where a 
fatal error is appropriate.  However, those situations
are generally AFTER the app has been given a chance
to handle the error (should it be so inclined).

System-generated fatal error dialogs should be a
-last- line of defense, not the first.

I realize that the only way to make this happen
is through the use of exception handling (and 
giving the OS the last bite at the apple), and that
not all development envirionments support exceptions, 
however it is the place to be aiming for.
