It sounds like your boot code or memory is fudged. Can you get put your
PalmIII in debug mode by holding down the down arrow and paperclip
reseting? (You should see a little tiny cursor blinking in the top left
corner of the screen.)
If yes, then you can fix, but you will need to download 3Com's PalmOS 3.3
upgrade at:
http://www.palmpilot.com/custsupp/upgrade/
I would:
a) backup your user files on your computer
b) put the PalmIII in debug mode and install the new PalmOS
c) hotsync and restore all your user files to the PDA
I've managed to have my PalmIII die like this for 2 reasons:
1. The capacitor that holds the 5 minute charge while changing batteries
was leaking.
2. There was a short-circuit when the motherboard touched the screen
electronics. (see http://www.asynccomputing.com/trg/faq/009/index.htm for a
more detailed description)
