While this sounds utterly stupid, did you try reseating your 
memory board? Alot of the times, a loose memory board is the 
root of the problem. 

1) Make sure your data is backed up somewhere.
2) Open up your 3 
(take out the four screws on the back, and use the stylus as a 
lever to pop the back cover)
3) take a deep breath <g>
4) Completely remove the memory board
5) Put it back in, (slanted and push down, like a PC SIMM)
6) (While probably not necessary,) hard-reset for luck <g>

And the OS3.3 upgrade is worthwhile in any case. 
While it eats a little more flash than 3.0, it does seem a heck 
of a lot faster, especially in HotSyncing.
