I subscribe to "PC Pro" (a UK paper-based magazine). The April issue came
through the letterbox yesterday, and has a review of the Palm IIIc.
Sorry I don't have a scanner :) Highlights are:
Dragonball EZ (20MHz) CPU
8Mb of RAM
2Mb ROM for the PalmOS 3.5
lithium ion rechargeable battery (10 hours life)
256-colour Sharp-made TFT screen
Dimensions: 80x15x128mm (8mm taller than the IIIx)
Weight: 185g (25g heavier than the IIIx)
In the UK, the price will probably be 318 pounds (374 pounds including the
UK's VAT (Value Added Tax at 17.5%))
So I guess that means it will be about 318 US Dollars because of the special
1 UKP = 1 USD currency exchange rate on anything electronic :)
Overall, review really praises it, giving it "5 out of 6" for features, and
"6 out of 6" for performance, value for money, and Overall.
The mag also mentions that the IIIc cradle is incompatible with the previous
devices. It also complains that "the stylus is a poor plastic imitation of
the excellent weighted metal one provided with the IIIx".
It says that the 10 hour battery life "compares well against Windows CE
devices".
It still feels just as fast as the previous Palm devices.
Bundled with the device is AvantGo web browser, powerOne calculator, and a
colourful Backgammon.
The summary is:
"The IIIc is slightly more expensive than the Casio but considerably lighter
and more compact. Whereas Windows CE devices bulk at the addition of colour,
the IIIc has retained its slenderness. Only the monochrome 8Mb Palm Vx can
compete on style, but for functionality and performance the IIIc earns a
well-deserved place on our A-List". [the A-List is the magazine's list of
"best thing" in each category. The Palm IIIc has knocked the Casio E-105
WinCE off the "Palmtop" category top spot. Hooray!
(I get the digest version of the dev-forum, so sorry if this stuff is
already known)
The mag's website is http://www.pcpro.co.uk but unfortunately they haven't
updated it with the new issue yet :(
