The latter. It is a separate chip.
And you've self-described yourself as a hacker, so you realize that things
you learn about this particular piece of hardware would not necessarily
have a good probability of being true on other pieces of hardware, and thus
you should stick to the APIs when there are perfectly good ones to use,
right? :-)

Hack away, just don't release apps to the public which hack without
checking their assumptions and/or OS version number and/or hardware
characteristics as defined in places like the Feature Manager,
HwrMiscFlags.h, and so forth.
