I haven't seen anything too recently (< a few weeks), but it was ~80% where
it has been for a while (check out www.palm.com <http://www.palm.com> 's
About page and IDC www.idc.com) <http://www.idc.com)> . Note: Beware of
reports that show Handspring and Palm as different; they both run the Palm
OS and nether are not born of the evil empire. Given that Sony's Clie
(another Palm OS licensee) sold out in one day in Japan (see CNET -
http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1006-200-2750827.html)
<http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1006-200-2750827.html)> , I would suspect that
Palm's world market share recently went up, if anything. From where I sit,
the Palm OS is spanking the evil empire's rump in the handheld market.

By the way, anyone remember the days when OS2 was a contender in the PC OS
arena? Rumor had it that Microsoft sympathizers (dare I say employees?)
frequented the OS2 discussion forums disparaging the OS. Now I am not
insinuating anything here, but I would suggest that we all be vigilant to
any claims against the Palm OS.

Regarding specific claims:

1.) How about some numbers i.e. empirical evidence.

2.) Yeah, from real high to kinda high. Personally, I cannot justify $500+
for a PDA.

3.) Whose demands? Where are these posted? IMHO, Palm has been incredibly
responsive in supplying what people really demand as compared to what
marketing surveys have indicated. In the past, Palm supplied a black and
white PDA and reduced power CPU with Graffiti when the market was
"demanding" a high powered color PDA with true handwriting recognition. I
think market share justifies Palm's decision.

Granted, we are at a new junction where wireless abilities appear to be the
demand. Can Palm provide the people with what they will buy? My bet for the
future is on a past performer.

4.) This forum is free and frequented by Palm and Metrowerks. Name a forum
where the evil empire attends and supplies helpful data. (

For comparison, MSDN - Microsoft Developer Network - costs $200 to $2000
dollars annually and this is just a pack of CDs - actual support plans are
even higher. (Note to Palm: No I don't want to be changed, please maintain
free support as long as you are able.)

Subject: Palm PDA - Market Share ???

I wonder what the Palm market share is currently.

There was a discussion a while back where people basically
discounted
the effect of the PocketPC on the market; stating pricing,
etc as the
                reason not to worry.

But I have seen some thing of late that worry me, a bit, as
a
                developer for the Palm.

                1) I am receiving a disturbingly high number of people
writing me
saying that they have sold their Palms in favor of the
PocketPC.

                2) Prices of color PocketPCs are dropping.

                3) Palm not keeping up with demands (color, sound, etc).

                4) Palm beginning to try and charge for support.

Anyone know what Palms market share is right now?
