>From many years of dealing with Symbol, to rely on a product in development you need a formal commitment that they'll build it. Short term alternative is to buy enough 2D 1700's to tide you over until the 2D 1800 becomes available. <vent> Ideally I'd like to see an ARM-based unit from Symbol, but PalmSource has done a really, really lousy job of keeping Symbol on board with Palm OS, despite the hundreds of thousands of their Palm OS units that Symbol has sold. </vent> Another alternative for you is to contact PSC (who did the SpringBoard Momentum scanner) and see their status for the kind of scanner you need.
