That's because you don't deal enough with non-Roman languages. Believe me, Unicode is paramount when you have to process things in a multitude of languages with various encodings, etc. At least, Unicode standardizes all this.

Oh well, maybe I'm biased because Mac OS X is fully Unicode ;-)
