Hey guys! Thanks for that wonderful thread! I gotta learn so many things on PalmOS versus SymbianOS.
Just got shifted in working on Symbian so was curious to know a few things on the new system that I would be working on. Personally, though, somehwere deep in my heart, I have always loved PalmOS a lot...more than my gal-friend! :-P > the development kits for symbian really suck - but, > the good news > is that they are gcc based (for some of us). there > lacks decent > compiler/front end support for these tools; hence, > it can be quite > hard to write even simple applications. Aaron, I guess with the Symbian guys deciding to knock the door of a well-known TX based compiler vendor ( who else? its the-best metrowerks! ) to supply the IDE for symbian app devlopment and bye-bye to the monopoly-leader-IDE, things just may change to developers' favor. We all have seen metrowerks doing that job very well in the case of palm-dev...it wont be a folly on my part to expect the same when it comes to symbian! Although I didnt have a chance to know on the details of the software build process under metrowerks tools chain, the VC-based era is certainly out. The best thing is that Metrowerk has the similar look-and-feel for symbian IDE as it has for Palm. That should come very handy for we (palm) guys. > Well in this discussion, nobody seems to talk about Microsoft. And not even mentioning on my another fav embedded linux. With motorola announcing the next series of there hardware to have the embedded linux, e-linux should get a fairer deal as well in the market. But at least for the moment, it linux is keeping its hood down. > Windows CE is already a widely used > system since it allows easy port from Windows > developments. I guess I am little hesitant to say "yes" on that. How many times have we heard that that was indded the case? I remember back in 2000 we had this project that was supposed to be ported on a CE device. It was all written using win API (some PC-side app). Boy, we had real tough time in seeing it that the application works on the device...sleepless nights at keyboard....sub-standard quality of the documentations....dirty tricks to keep the things efficient...thanks to CE, we had all sorts of bad-experiences! To me it seems that in order to jump into the market, MS guys gave a very little thought to the various APIs...especially from the memory-management view. Dont wanna rage one more war on MS bad software-quality, but personally I feel porting a PC side Win API application to a CE-device should be treated as a herculian-stuff. --- Aaron Ardiri <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > While waiting for my GSM Treo 600 I picked up a > Nokia 3650 (Symbian) > > for $99 during a t-mobile promotion.
