Oh, I know!

No thanks :-)

In my main development tools, makefiles are zero lines. Much nicer.

Well, you don't **have** to reach for the mouse, and actually there are
studies that show that they're quicker for many people. Modern IDEs have
a lot of productivity features you don't find in primitive text editors.
Some of us prefer not to have to learn loads of keyboard shortcuts too
:-)

I'd like mine to be cygwin-free.

That's my point - there aren't any. I don't want cygwin at all. I don't
want to use the command line at all. When I have to use prc-tools to
build Palm apps, that's all I want to do. I don't want a fake bit of
another OS clogging up my machine with rubbish. Bill's done enough of
that for me already :-) Surely all I really need is the compiler,
linker, debugger and make?

I've noticed that the Palm programming groups are very old fashioned in
their approach to development (making a broad generalisation here). You
can get away with it for the sort of small apps that you get on the
PalmOS. However, some of us are used to more productive environments,
tools that help with programming in the large, and spending time on
things that matter, rather than having to spend time learning useless
(to us, at least) tools just so we can do an install.

Although the PalmOS is a better OS, IMO, it has to be said that PocketPC
has the better dev tools. VS.NET is **much** easier to use than anything
for the PalmOS. Revelling in the fact that you're using command line
tools is not doing anything to convince many people that programming for
the Palm is a good idea. My boss in my new job is convinced that the
PalmOS is doomed, purely because of that, and it's a common perception.
Misguided perhaps (I hope!), but still common.

Cheers,
Jim Cooper
