I'd say PalmSource isn't clinging to the past -- they are pushing Palm OS Cobalt very hard to their licenses (it has multiple threads, a standard C library, and BSD sockets) and they're moving their API to run on top of embedded Linux.
Which of course begs the question why one can't have several PACE instances running on top of embedded linux instead of all the hell associated with a new OS.
