For the record (and I hope I'm not adding to the confusion), I've tried to
operate two WD My Book 320Gb Powered external drives from a single USB 2.0
powered hub (plugged into the back of the computer). The computer (HP) would
only recognize one of the drives.

I'm not using notebook drives that get their power from the computer.

When I plugged one of those drives directly into one of the front ports, it
would be recognized, and it would show that I had two My Books hooked up (the
one still hooked up to the hub and the one from the front port).

I guess what I was trying to say is, that I need to buy a few extra powered
hubs to see what would happen if I plugged one My Book, and no more than that,
into each of the powered hubs (I've got four, I'm holding two in reserve). I
have a similar number of ports on my computer as Jim.

Based on what Jim said earlier, and confirmed by what I tried to do before I
knew about Jim's attempts, multiple hard drives off the same hub don't work.

The next experiment that I need to try is to plug another one into another port
and see if my computer suffers from the same 1TB limit as Jim's.
