Forget using hubs when plugging in things like Hard Drives that don't
have their own power supply. Mr USB port runs on about 6 volts and then
Mr User jams 2 or 3 hard drives in which each need to drive a motor for
the platter and a step motor for the pickup arm and all of a sudden you
have a port that can't deliver enough juice to light an LED let alone
run 4 or 6 motors. Simple voltage drop, besides which Mr USB port is
like a road...he is only so wide and when you plug a device in singly it
has the whole road to drive on...plug in another and each has half a
road...plug in 4 and they have a quarter each...see where this is
going ?...USB is basically a fixed bandwidth for data transfer, and not
a particularly good one at that despite all the noises that business
make when they try to sell you USB devices. It's a bit like wireless
networks..sold as a done deal but anyone who has to deal with them knows
just how poorly they perform in reality. Also don't trust your Western
Dogfood drive....another brand with which I have used the dead members
of it's bretheren to pave my 200 metre long driveway.
Not trying to be a negative soul here just my experiences.
