This is something I've never understood, myself.

On one side of the coin, comic books are terrible about continuity, 
constantly killing off characters and resurrecting them at will, and the 
fans have no problem with this.  Then, on the other side of the coin you 
have Star Trek and the Trekkies, who nit-pick every detail of every book, TV 
show, movie, video game, whatever, as to whether or not they are "canon".

I can't believe the outcry of some of these people over the new Star Trek 
movie.  It's so darn silly.
