Old Spock explains the timeline was trashed with the return of the bad-guy
ship, and that all he could do at this point was try and minimize the damage
but making sure that his younger self still became friends with JTK. I'm sure
this was done to placate the time-line police of star trek fandom.

Canon is an old hebrew term for "measure" and is applied to Scripture,
mythologies and story telling. If a long epic story has a detailed back history,
that story must remember the history and keep true to it.  This is called
Canon. So the 66 books of the bible are canonical books, where as other "lost
books" (a silly term) are considered outside of canon as they break the rules
of history compared to other scripture and history itself.
There is a long and honored history of referring to the Trrek back story as
canon as well. The Movies are canonical - the comics are not - the books are not
- some of the technical manuals are.
So when Kirk is born in space rather than on Earth in Iowa that is
considered non-canonical... with wiggle room. When Chekov is on board the
Enterprise and an officer whilst Uhrura and Kirk who are older and always
outrank him are still cadets yet giving him orders... well, that is just
illogical... and non-canonical.
So I loved the movie... but I wish some things would have made more sense.
Like - I don't care what you do, you don't go from a three year cadet to
captain of the Federation Flagship, promoted over 5 grades of rank and over
1000s of candidates.
But I ramble.-The Haggard

I realize that, I just don't understand what the canon reference is.

Jon,
He didn't say it wasn't a good movie. He said it did not follow established
precedent enough - for his scale of judging.

  3/10 canon??? I don't get it.

my new scale on judging movies in my family is how long the discussion after
the movie goes on for. We were laughing and talking about the movie for hours
after on Sat night, and continued over breakfast  on Sunday.  That's a record
breaker for us.

The movie was everything it is supposed to be and a weeee bit more...

Love it or hate it... the n
ew Trek has a
 BUNCH of new ships to

model... I can't wait. besides the Kelvin and the Big-E:

There is a ship with KELVIN parts that has two engines and two

secondaries looking kind of like the Reliant from ST:TWOK

There is also a three engined ship with Kelvin parts. There is also

an on screen representation of the Kubyashi Maru that looks grand!

I will NOT be designing any model of the Narada nor will I build one

designed by another... too much!

10 of 10 for the models and FX... 9 of 10 for the acting and pace... 7

of 10 for the story... 3 of 10 for the adherence to canon.

Well worth the buckage.
