Also lets not the roots of ST, its "horatio hornblower in space."  As
I recall in the Naval tradition of C.S. Foresster's Horatio
Hornblower, its quite customary when a new admiral is appointed he
gets to make a new set of full-posts of underlings.  If you notice
Captain Pike is now Admiral Pike, and it was quite clear that he felt
he owed JTK, and liked JTK.  Following the HH example this is exactly
how HH got his first posting as midshipman...

I don't think any of this is careless.  I think the writers/directors
of this movie were very careful and knew there star trek lore very
well.
