LOL I've had this discussion before. And while its a stretch, its not
that crazy when you consider:
1) half the fleet has just been wiped out, he has just moved pretty
far up on the senority list.
2) Pike had already given him the field commission, on the big-E no
less.
3) He just proved he COULD return the big-E in one piece where-as the
rest of starfleet is floating around in the debris around what used to
be vulcan
4) You've also got a old spock pulling some strings at command,
Sure its still a stretch, but totally out of the question is a bit
harsh...
