I have made a simple wire stand for a model to help it stand up. A length of wire with a loop in the middle that was bent to make it horizontal, then the two ends inserted up through the legs. The loop was hidden in a base.
I have also used tissue paper stuffed in the legs and body of some models, much like Susie mentioned with the cotton or poly stuffing. The tissue paper helped with the balance since most of it was kept low in the model and it also helped in keeping the shape of the model by giving some internal support.
