Thanks for the replies, folks! All good ideas! The white rice being used before makes me think the concept will work. I'm going to go ahead and try the soybeans first though to see how they turn out. It was my idea, so I'm biased. :P I've been storing my soybeans in a paper cylinder (previously used for oats) this whole time. I've never seen discoloration of any kind. Besides that, I have a feeling a rice would slip out through cracks in my model. I'm quite inept at gluing those little tabs flush.
I have a pet mouse I caught in my attic. I think for dinner tonight, I'll give him a soybean and see how he reacts.
