The only surge protector that protects against lightning is to be unplugged from
the wall. (including modems, etc.) A surge protector can not stop the surge
caused by a lightning strike and the circuit breaker takes miliseconds to pop
after the surge has passed through to the computers.

I use a UPS with a battery backup. (a very expensive top of the line APS unit)
It says right on the front of the case: "Unplug during electrical storms." It
is designed to supply power while doing a normal shut down of the computers
after pulling the plugs from the wall, but can give sufficient power to continue
operating for several hours if needed. (This is not recommended as the static
in the air during an electrical storm is sufficient to cause damage to the now
non-grounded computer.)
