I have to agree with David on this... the only way to adequately protect
is to disconnect, especially from lightning strikes.
I do that and admit that its a nuisance sometimes, but better safe than
sorry I think.

I am also a radio amateur, and one evening a storm came over so i
disconnecte my rig from the antenna. Seconds later there was a strike
very close to my house, and the electric field from it caused an ionised
"flash" about 60cm long to burst from the end of the coax and into the
room. Since that time I ALWAYS dsconnect if there is even a hint of an
electrical storm.
