they'll also provide maximum harassment and slowest possible response.
my aunt went through this last year, it took 4 or 5 months to get her
money, and she had all the receipts and documentation. it's allot like
trying to pry money out of the goverment-good luck.
on another note, meci.com has some great deals on ups systems, i've been
using a 1000 watt unit for months, works great, rode right through
several glitches the last few days. i do still unplug everything when i
hear thunder, it's a pain, but it works assuming you don't get a strike
in your own lawn, in which case you may still have problems. this ups
was custom made for ncr, and only cost me $200 (they have been in
storage, and i expect to have to replace the batteries within a couple
years, but batteries are cheap). they also have some smaller ones for
$100 or less. i also have my ups plugged into a surge protector, it's
perfectly fine to plug one protector into another, and provides
substantial added protection, some ups's on the other hand don't like a
surge arrestor plugged into the output from the ups. also don't forget
to unplug the phone line and any connections to other equipment, i.e. if
you have the audio plugged into your stereo it should be on the same
outlet and also unplugged during a storm. if you've been sampling tv
audio don't forget to disconnect the audio cable or unplug the tv and
coax. also make sure your outlet really is grounded, i've seen allot of
3 prong outlets that weren't, including the one i'm using, i had to run
a ground wire from the breaker box. you can buy outlet testers for
about $10 at hardware stores or find someone with a volt meter to check
them, although the plug in testers are actually better and
simpler.(mostly because they are simpler) also know that grounds are
hard to come by in some areas, i worked at a university in new mexico,
because of the soil conditions it was impossible to get a good ground,
not one building on campus had a good one, including the phone system
for the campus which the phone company had to replace after a storm (in
socorro nm, the second most active site for lightning on the planet,
they study lightning there). the phone company is very good about
grounding, they've learned from experience. unfortunately if your soil
is always dry and there is a rock layer underneath it it's nearly
impossible to get a ground that matters. there are testers for ground
resistance but they aren't cheap. to meet code in some areas you may
have to drive 2 or 3 separate ground rods tied together to get a good
ground. of course if your house never had a ground you'll need to drive
a ground rod etc. the nec (national electric code) is available on
line, and you can have a 2 or 3 year old version free if your willing to
download the pdf file. write me off list and i can forward the '96
version which is a good starting point, although you'll want a plain
english book as well before you do wiring, the nec is one of those
wonderful combinations of technical and legal writing mixed, very hard
to learn from.
