You're wrong, in a way. But, in a way you are right too. I think maybe you are
reading too far into Apple's motivation here... Yes, the beta worked fine on
upgraded machines. However, it wasn't (And still isn't...) perfect. Sleep mode
is still broken, PCI video doesn't work well... The list goes on.
It is nowhere near cost-effective for Apple to have even _one_ person work on
fixing the upgraded machines drivers. All they will get is the money that is
spent on OS X, they get nothing else in hardware. And, they would've spent
lots of money to fix the problem. Even if they only worked one week on the
problems, that would be in the thousands of dollars.
Apple isn't going out of their way to disable support for our upgraded
machines in OS X. If they were, they would've removed the driver from the
Darwin distribution as well. In a weird sort of way, Apple provided us with
most of the tools necessary to support our machines. They just finish the job.
Rempel has hacked the Apple drivers to fix some of the problems. He still
hasn't fixed the PCI video problem. Ask any 7x00/8x00 user, they can't use any
video besides the onboard one.
If I were Apple, I wouldn't have supported the machines for that reason alone.
If these machines were supported, can you imagine the tech support calls? It
will only take Rempel a few days to update the UnsupportedExtensions,
UnsupportedUtilityX, and L2CacheConfig for 10.1.
And, I don't think Apple is discriminating against Rempel as far as recieving
developer beta software is concerned. Apple requires a large sum of money for
a group to be a developer. It's nice for Apple, but it's also to keep people
from signing up as a beta developer, getting the new releases and throwing it
up on Characho. If you spend so much money you're less likely to throw it
away.
I know this went pretty long, but I think it sums up the whole situation
pretty well.
