Erin,

You don't mention how much RAM you have now - using PS 5.5 on
my 7600 RAM has been the major consideration after doing the other
obvious things (kill useless extensions, don't run other stuff).
If you already own "a lot", then stay the course. If you don't, get
past the sentimentality and save for something newer.

Have you at least configured your memory options in PS to use what
you have well? I run about 180 MB of RAM in the 7600 with the native
132Mhz CPU, and it's workable. Have to watch the layers in higher res
color mode, etc.

The cost of new RAM for this series is still a farce IMHO - talk supply
and demand all you want, but there has to be a pretty signifcant supply
for what is a relatively small audience.

That's the barrier - storage, processor upgrades, etc. have come down
to reasonable levels compared to a few years ago, but you have to
question the economics of putting half the price of a lower-end iMac
complete into an 8500 just for half a gig of RAM...in a new Mac the RAM
could be had for ~$100 (assuming 2x 256MB PC100).
