One thing you could also do is buy a used B&W "Yosemite" G3. That machine
was kind of a bridge between the Old World and New World machines. It comes
with USB and FireWire controllers on-board, but it also comes with an ADB
port for your old peripherals. Finally, it has a faster system bus (100MHz)
and RAM for it is much cheaper than for your 9500 (it uses PC100 SDRAM),
processor upgrades will be a fair amount easier and cheaper (due to the ZIF
socket) and faster (due to the higher bus speed). Finally, they go for
around $700 today--much less than a new G4. As you said, if your CPU is fast
enough already, then the stock 300-450MHz 750 in a Yosemite will be more
than enough.
