First things first.
Did you shutdown or restart the Mac while it was doing the Format before???
If so you may have rendered the drive useless!
NEVER interrupt a format in process!!!
Go ahead and try to low level format and check the box to write zero's,
this will parse out any bad blocks that may be on the drive.
This could take several hours depending on the size of your drive,
and the speed of your Mac.
You won't get a progress bar just the spinning ball.
If you don't get a choice of HFS or HFS+ just let the drive format HFS
Once it's done you can use a program Plus Optimizer to convert the drive
to the HFS+ format.
